About Us
Action Athletic Equipment, Inc. was founded in 1967 by Joe Higgins, Leo Janis and Walt Rucks. All three were teachers and coaches in northern Illinois high schools, Higgins and Janis at Zion-Benton, Rucks at Waukegan. In addition to his teaching and coaching, Higgins was also a referee for wrestling. During the mid '60s, he observed first hand the improvement of newer vinyl coated, closed cell foam mats over the old style fabric covered mats.
Higgins and his partners teamed up with Uniroyal Ensolite, makers of the foam and Flexabar, makers of the vinyl coating to develop the Actionite wrestling mat. The Actionite mat was instantly accepted by the wrestling community as safe and durable in addition to being an excellent value. The manufacturing materials and techniques developed then were quickly adopted by other mat companies and are still in use today.
From its single product beginnings, Action Athletic has expanded the products manufactured to wall padding, landing surfaces, gymnasium mats, specialty padding, virtually anywhere protection is needed from impact, Action will be there.
As we move towards 40 years in business, we remain committed to keeping the Action Athletic name and reputation one that our founders will be proud of.
